What We Do

Propagule's Vision

An abundance of vibrant self-sustaining settlements in space and regenerative communities on Earth supported by ecological technologies -- consisting of both organisms and machines -- that will spread life throughout the solar system.

Propagule's Mission

To advance closed ecological life support systems science and technology by conducting and supporting research and development and disseminating it to industry and the public.

Propagule's Goals

To achieve long-term, large-scale settlements beyond Earth, bioregenerative life support will be necessary. However, research in this area lags far behind hardware development. Furthermore, what research is done is usually uncoordinated and focused on system components (mostly plants) rather than the whole system. There is thus a critical need for system-oriented, coordinated and collaborative research and development in the field of bioregenerative life support. That's where we come in.

Our goals are:

  • Identify knowledge and technology gaps in bioregenerative life support (BLSS) R&D
  • Raise and distribute R&D funds from public and private sources
  • Develop research tools for use by the community (such as open source modeling software, architectures, and other technology)
  • Conduct research on bioregenerative life support systems, artificial biospheres and relevant science
  • Facilitate collaboration and networking  among scientists, engineers, business and government entities working in this area.
  • Develop and operate integrated demonstration and test facilities
  • Store, organize, and share knowledge and best practices
  • Conduct public outreach and education for all ages and walks of life
  • Translate knowledge and best practices into technology for sustainable living on earth and in space
