Propagule Space Ecology Institute is a nonprofit organization advancing the science and technology needed to support life in space and strengthen regenerative systems on Earth.
We focus on closed ecological life support systems: living systems designed to recycle resources, maintain balance, and support long-term human presence beyond Earth. Our work brings together ecology, engineering, modeling, research, and open collaboration to help build the foundations for sustainable communities in space.
A propagule is a stage in an organism’s life cycle that allows it to spread to new habitats.
For us, the name reflects a larger vision: helping Earth life take root beyond our planet through resilient, regenerative ecological systems.

Why This Work Matters
Humanity is moving toward a future where people may live and work beyond low Earth orbit for longer periods of time. But long-term space exploration cannot depend only on resupply from Earth or machine-based systems that move resources in one direction.
To build lasting communities in space, we need systems that behave more like ecosystems: recycling air, water, nutrients, and waste while staying resilient over time.
Propagule exists to help close that gap.
Led by Space Ecology and Systems Science Expertise
Jane Shevtsov, Ph.D. is a systems ecologist, educator, and NIAC Fellow whose work focuses on ecosystem modeling, closed ecological systems, and bioregenerative life support.
Her background includes research at NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Space Life Sciences Lab, ecosystem modeling and analysis, and space ecology initiatives focused on sustainable life beyond Earth.
